Staging And Direction
One of the most important parts of being a photographer is knowing how to stage a picture because people are inherently awkward when they have a camera placed in front of them. In order to overcome this one of the things I usually do is spend the day with the couple a few days prior so they can get a feel for who I am and what they want. It is easier to give directions to people when you know what kind of people they are and what they are comfortable with.
Lighting is one of the most important parts of photography, understanding how to use light and how to bounce light during the day is a critical part of being efficient and getting the shot you want. Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is warmer and softer than when the sun is in the sky. It is usually an optimal time to go out and take some pictures but if you can't because they aren't able to go out during that time you can recreate this diffusion of light with a soft box or a bounce.
If you are heading to a secluded area and you can't bring a generator or one is not in your budget, you can bring a five by five paper bounce with a muslin sheet taped to one side. This will help you soften the light that hits your subject face, and you don't need to go out there and buy a fancy expensive bounce you can get a white cork board sheet at any art supply store for a few dollars.
When you are shooting a wedding you don't want to spend the entire day bothering the groom or bride. Instead you want to defer to a relative or a best friend. The bride is already stressed enough and if you're lucky the groom hasn't drunken himself into a stupor the night before. What I've learned through day to day life is that drunk people are difficult to coordinate. Find the one not drunk guy AND girl in the wedding party and make sure they stay that way so they can help you get everyone together to stage a photo.
